The next year, I was back and found all my fittings to my tent except for one, which didn’t matter because I’d bought extra fittings not knowing what I would find.

The weather was perfect. The elk again serenaded me at night and after chasing several bulls around the first day. I did have several opportunities for shots. The bulls I saw were too small, or the shots were obstructed by brush, so I didn’t take any shots.

Not very long after daylight the next day, I had the opportunity, which every bow hunter dreams of. A huge, mature bull was standing, bugling at another bull, quartering away from me at less than 20 yards. I was able to come to full draw without him knowing I was anywhere around. His attention was on the other bull that was walking towards him. The arrow pierced his heart. He dropped to the ground, rolled down a hill a few yards, and lay still-dying instantly.

I was extremely happy with my shot—not so much that I’d hit exactly where I was aiming but because it was such a quick, clean kill.

That bull is still the biggest one I’ve ever shot with a bow. I took several pictures of his antlers. For some reason, Diesel wandered into almost every photo. Each year, he seemed to be hanging around the camp more than grazing with his buddies. He began enjoying the companionship of people more every year—also getting better at mooching the horse pellets from me.

As I am writing this, I am getting my gear ready to go into The Land Beyond All Roads where there was a fire a few years ago. The grass is waist deep, the elk are loving it, and the hunting pressure is nonexistent. I’m sure, because of just being there, I’ll be loving it, too.
